Burum on the Web!

cows in front of Burum's antennapark Welcome to our English-speaking guests!

The village of Burum is a tiny rural community of approx. 600 inhabitants. Burum is part of the agglomerate of Kollumerland c.a., which is situated south of beautyspot Lauwersmeer, part of the Dutch Shallows, in the province of Friesland, in the Netherlands

* the huge satellite-antennas  providing communications world-wide;

* the churchtower of the original medieval Dutch "Hervormde" Church (rebuilt in 1784) and

* the sails of the "Windlust" a windmill which had it's origins in 1578, and was fully restored in 1999

In the village of Burum, more than 20 organizations are active.

Their interests vary from dealing with playgroups for the youngest, up to the burying of the deceased and everything that lies in between: education, sports, culture and arts.

The main purpose of this website is to inform the community about the activities of those organizations.

Of course, we welcome guests from abroad to visit this very special place with it's people, cows, birds, sheep, silence, wind and a horizon which is far, far away

A very special welcome for the people of Fulton, IL., U.S.A. !

On May 6th 2000, your newly built windmill, as well as our newly restored "Windlust" were opened officially.

Here in Burum the resumption of usage of our mill was a major event which everyone enjoyed. We hope that the opening of your windmill gave everyone of you the same pleasure!

Almost a year later, we received the news that "De Immigrant" received the Merit Award of The Consulting Engineers Council of Illinois for Technical Excellence. Congratulations! On March 20 we welcomed a group of intending millers with familymembers from your city. At last, the "Burum-Fulton" connection was laid!

If not officially, Fulton and Burum will have a "sistermillship" forever!
